In a coil, the resistance or impedance of the coil is when the solenoid is open (i.e. when the plunger is not present). As the plunger is pulled into the closed position, the impedance increases. Therefore, the current of the hydraulic AC solenoid valve is consumed when the solenoid valve is open (the plunger is withdrawn) and when the solenoid valve is closed (the plunger is inserted).
The high current consumption of an open-circuit AC solenoid is called surge current. The current consumed when the solenoid is closed is called the holding current.
